How to Read a Probiotic Label: CFU, Strains and Delivery

Probiotic labels break most of the rules we apply to every other supplement. The number on the front is measured in billions, the ingredients are living organisms, and almost every bottle on the shelf lists them inside a blend.

That last point is worth being blunt about, because we say elsewhere on this site that hidden blends are a reason to put a bottle back. Probiotics are the one category where a blend is the norm rather than a dodge, and here is why, plus what to demand instead.

1. CFU is a count of living things, so ask when it was counted

CFU stands for colony-forming units: how many organisms in the capsule are alive and able to multiply. Live cultures die off over time, faster when they are warm.

So the meaningful question is not how many CFU the label claims but when that count was taken. A bottle guaranteeing its count at expiry is promising you what you will actually swallow. A bottle counting at time of manufacture is telling you what it had before it sat on a truck and a shelf. Same number on the front, different products.

If a label does not say which it is, that silence is itself information.

2. Bigger CFU is not automatically better

Fifty billion is not five times better than ten billion in the way fifty milligrams is five times ten. Effects in the research are tied to specific strains at the amounts those strains were studied at, and past a certain point more organisms simply means more organisms.

Treat a very large CFU number the way you would treat a very large horsepower figure on a family car: possibly relevant, possibly the easiest thing to print in a big font.

3. The strain code is the whole game

This is the part most labels skip, and it is the one that matters most.

A probiotic name has three parts. Lactobacillus is the genus. Acidophilus is the species. La-14 is the strain. Research is run on strains, not on species: two products can both say "Lactobacillus acidophilus" and contain organisms that behave quite differently.

A label that stops at the species name is not lying, but it is unfalsifiable. You cannot look up what was studied, because you do not know what you have. A label that prints the strain code lets you check.

4. Why probiotics are labelled as blends

Here is the honest structural explanation. When several strains are combined, the viable-organism count is measured on the finished blend, not split cleanly per strain, and the proportions shift over shelf life as different strains die off at different rates. Splitting the CFU per strain on a label would imply a precision the measurement does not have.

That is a real reason, and it applies across the category. It is not, however, a licence to tell you nothing. The blend format is defensible when the label still names every strain with its code and prints the total CFU and the blend weight. It is not defensible when you get "Probiotic Blend, 50 billion CFU" and four species names in a marketing paragraph.

5. Delivery: getting past stomach acid

Stomach acid kills bacteria. That is its job. Any probiotic has to get past it, and the label should say how: a delayed-release or enteric capsule, a protective matrix technology, or a strain naturally hardy in acid.

If the bottle says nothing at all about delivery, you are trusting that the organisms survive a journey specifically designed to prevent that.

6. Prebiotics, refrigeration, and the small print

  • Prebiotic fiber feeds the bacteria. Its presence is a formulation choice, not a marketing bonus, and the amount should be on the label like anything else.
  • Refrigeration: some products require it, others are stabilized to sit at room temperature. Neither is inherently better, but a product that needs the fridge and did not travel in one is a product with a problem.
  • Capsule material matters if you avoid gelatin, and it lives in the "other ingredients" line.

What our label says

Probiotic 40 Billion uses a blend, for the reason above, and names all four strains down to the code: Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14, Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04, Lactobacillus plantarum Lp-115 and Lactobacillus paracasei Lpc-37. The total is 40 billion CFU per two-capsule serving, in an 800 mg blend, with a marine polysaccharide bypass technology for stomach acid and 24 mg of prebiotic fructooligosaccharide. The capsules are vegetable, not gelatin.
