Walk down the supplement aisle, or scroll one marketplace category, and you will find hundreds of bottles promising the same thing in slightly different fonts. The marketing on the front is written to persuade you. The label on the back is the part that is regulated. That is where the useful information lives, and it takes about ninety seconds to read once you know what you are looking at.
Here is the checklist we use ourselves.
1. Does it name the extract, or just the plant?
"Black cohosh" on a label can mean a standardized root extract or it can mean ground-up plant material of unknown strength. Those are not the same product, and they do not behave the same way.
A serious label tells you three things about each botanical: the part of the plant used (root, leaf, fruit), the extract ratio or standardization, and the amount per serving. If a label gives you a plant name and a milligram number with nothing else, you are being told less than you think.
2. Is there a proprietary blend?
A proprietary blend is a list of ingredients followed by one combined weight. "Menopause Support Blend, 1,500 mg" tells you the total, never the split. That blend can be 1,450 mg of the cheapest ingredient and 50 mg spread across the ones you actually came for, and the label would still be accurate.
Blends are legal and common. They exist to protect formulas from being copied, and they also happen to make underdosing invisible. When you cannot see the split, you cannot compare two products on anything except price and packaging.
This is the single fastest way to sort a shelf. If the doses are hidden, put it back.
3. Do the doses match what was actually studied?
Most well-known botanical ingredients have published research behind them, and that research used specific amounts. A label that discloses its doses lets you check them against what has been studied. A label that hides them does not.
You do not need a pharmacology background for this. Search the ingredient name plus "clinical trial dose", see what range comes up, and compare. If a product contains a tenth of the amount used in the research, it may still be a pleasant capsule, but you should know that is what you are buying.
We are not going to tell you what dose to take. That conversation belongs with your healthcare professional, who knows your history and your medications. What we will say is that the label should give you enough information to have that conversation at all.
4. Servings per container, not just price
Two bottles at the same price are rarely the same purchase. One might hold 30 servings, the other 90. One might call two capsules a serving, so the sixty-count bottle is a thirty-day supply.
Divide the price by the number of servings and compare cost per day. It is a ten-second calculation and it reorders most shelves considerably.
5. The "other ingredients" line
Below the main panel is a line most people skip. It lists what holds the product together: capsule material, flow agents, sweeteners, colors. It is also where allergens appear.
If you avoid soy, gelatin, dairy or artificial sweeteners, this line is the only place that will tell you. Vegetarians should check whether the capsule is vegetable cellulose or gelatin, since the front of the bottle will not mention it either way.
6. Where it is made, and how it is tested
Look for a manufacturing address and the terms "FDA-registered facility" and "cGMP". Current Good Manufacturing Practices are the rules covering how a supplement is produced, documented and checked. A facility can be inspected against them; a marketing claim cannot.
Then ask a harder question: can you get the paperwork? A certificate of analysis is the lab document for a specific batch, showing what was tested and what was found. Brands that have them will send them. Brands that do not will change the subject.

7. What the label is not allowed to say
Every dietary supplement sold in the United States carries a version of this sentence: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
That disclaimer is not a warning about a specific product. It marks a legal boundary. Supplements may describe how an ingredient supports a normal body function. They may not claim to treat a condition. So a label can say a product supports restful sleep; it cannot say it treats insomnia.
Once you know that, the disclaimer becomes a useful filter in reverse: if a product's marketing promises to cure, treat or eliminate something, that product is making a claim its own label is not allowed to make. Believe the label.
8. The warnings are there for a reason
Botanical ingredients are active. That is the point of them, and it is also why the cautions matter. Several common menopause-support botanicals are not suitable during pregnancy or nursing, and some can interact with prescription medication.
If you take anything prescribed, or you are pregnant, nursing or trying to conceive, talk with your healthcare professional before starting a new supplement. A label cannot know what else you are taking. Your clinician can.
