Creatine went from a bodybuilding shelf item to something recommended in perimenopause conversations in about three years. The catalogue grew to match. Tubs now come in twenty flavors, half a dozen "advanced" forms, and a price range of about four to one for what is often the same white powder.
The differences that matter are printed on the back. Here is how to read one.
1. The form: monohydrate is the boring answer, and the researched one
Creatine monohydrate is the form used in the large majority of published creatine research. It is also the cheapest to manufacture, which is precisely why so much marketing exists around alternatives: hydrochloride, buffered, magnesium chelate, liquid, gummies.
Those newer forms are usually sold on claims of better absorption or less bloating. If a product asks you to pay more for one of them, the question to ask is simple: compared with monohydrate, in humans, in a published trial? Often the honest answer is that the research is thin.
When a label says "creatine blend" without naming the forms and their amounts, you are back in proprietary blend territory, where the split is hidden.
2. The dose per scoop, and how many scoops the label assumes
Most creatine research uses about 5 grams of creatine monohydrate per day for maintenance. That number is easy to check on a label, and easy to hide.
Two things to look at together: the milligrams of creatine per serving, and how big a serving is. A tub can advertise 5 grams per serving where a serving is two scoops, which quietly halves the servings you thought you were buying. Check the scoop size in grams, then the servings per container, then the price. That three-step check reorders a shopping cart quickly.
3. What else is in the scoop
Plain creatine is one ingredient. Anything else in the tub is a formulation decision, and you should be able to see the reason for it on the label.
Electrolytes are the common addition, and they are not decoration: creatine draws water into muscle cells, so sodium, potassium and magnesium have a job to do alongside it. What matters is whether the amounts are disclosed and whether they suit you. Sodium in particular deserves a look. If you have been told to watch your sodium intake, the electrolyte version of a creatine powder is a conversation to have with your clinician, not a detail to skim.
4. Sweeteners: the honest trade-off
This is where flavored and unflavored part ways, and neither answer is automatically correct.
Unflavored is the shortest ingredient list you can buy: creatine and nothing else. It is also chalky in water, and a meaningful number of people quietly stop taking it for exactly that reason. A supplement you abandon in week three has no benefit at all.
Flavored means sweeteners and flavoring, and that is where labels diverge. Sucralose and acesulfame potassium are the common artificial choices. Stevia leaf extract and monk fruit are the common plant-derived ones. Some tubs still use sugar or maltodextrin, which is worth catching if you are counting calories: check the calories per serving, and be suspicious of anything above roughly 20 to 30 kcal for a plain creatine product.
There is no health verdict to hand you here. There is a label question: does the tub tell you which sweetener it uses, and are you comfortable taking that one every day for a year? Daily is the operative word. Creatine works through consistency, so whatever is in the scoop is something you are choosing to have every morning.
5. Where it was made, and whether anyone checked
Creatine is an ingredient with a real supply chain, and quality varies. Look for a manufacturing address, an FDA-registered and cGMP-compliant facility, and a brand that will send you a certificate of analysis for your batch if you ask. A brand that cannot produce paperwork for a single-ingredient powder is telling you something.

6. The cost-per-day check
Divide the price by the servings per container. Creatine monohydrate is one of the least expensive supplements in existence, and a tub priced like a specialty product should be able to explain why: a named branded raw material, added electrolytes at disclosed doses, third-party paperwork. "Premium" is not an explanation.
What our label says
Creatine Hydration Powder is 5,000 mg of creatine monohydrate per 10 g scoop, with sea-salt sodium, potassium and magnesium disclosed individually rather than as a blend. It is naturally flavored and sweetened with stevia leaf extract, with no artificial sweeteners and 22 kcal per serving, and one tub is 30 servings. The sodium content is 1,000 mg per serving, which we print in the description as well as on the label, because it is the number most likely to matter to someone.
